College Preparatory English

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:

1) To help students improve their writing skills to be successful at the college level.
2) To give students experiences in writing which they will have in college.
3) To provide students with an overview of British literature.
4) To provide students with an overview of modern American literature.
5) To assist students in gaining a mastery of grammar and mechanics.
6) To teach students how to peer revise and peer edit.
7 )To help students understand the steps of the writing process: prewriting, writing, revising, and editing.
8) To teach students to support ideas with factual documentation from a text or document.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to prepare students for writing experiences at a four year college. During the first semester, this experience will include evaluative essays over the novel Fahrenheit 451, an extended literary analysis covering the epic of Beowulf, a comparison/contrast essay over characters in The Canterbury Tales, and a research paper.
During the second semester, a multicultural study over Schindler’s List will include a cause/effect paper, reflective essays, and a multicultural research project. In addition, the semester will include papers over the styles of process, classification, and definition. The class ends with a farewell address.
