Transitional Kindergarten (TK)/Kindergarten Placement
We have two kindergarten programs at Hinton Elementary. Both of our kindergarten classes meet all day, every day and students participate in an integrated program of reading, math, science, social studies, and art that follow the standards and benchmarks of the Iowa Core Curriculum. All students have music and physical education with teachers that that specialize in those areas and have designated times for story time and library check-out. TK and Kindergarten students share their lunch and recess periods with their first-grade friends.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is available for children needing extra time to mature and develop. Most children attending this program have late spring, summer or early fall birthdays. Transitional Kindergarten provides an extra year for children to develop physically, socially, and academically before entering the traditional kindergarten program. TK can promote confidence and independence in children as they have an extra year of learning which acts as a bridge between preschool and traditional kindergarten. A year of TK is always followed by a year of traditional kindergarten.
Most children attend our traditional kindergarten program. Your child is ready for the traditional kindergarten program if he or she likes to play with other children, transitions well to new situations, enjoys having conversations with others and sharing with friends, can pay attention for 10-15 minutes or the length of a children’s book, shows an interest in letters and numbers, and demonstrates good self-control.
