The Hinton Community School District Board of Education has approved a resolution to place an $8.6 million general obligation bond referendum on the Tuesday, November 3, 2026 ballot. The proposal focuses on critical infrastructure, accessibility, site and learning space needs at the District’s existing Middle/High School facility.
The 2026 referendum follows three previous bond referendum attempts that did not reach the voter approval threshold required for passage. While the proposals did not pass, the facility needs have not gone away. Aging heating and ventilation systems, windows, electrical systems, exterior masonry and other building components continue to require attention.
Finish What We Started
Over the past several years, Hinton CSD has used available SAVE and PPEL funds to complete significant facility improvements without increasing property taxes. This work has included roof, transportation and technology investments, along with portions of heating and ventilation, window and flooring improvements.
While significant progress has been made, critical work remains at the Middle/High School. The 2026 proposal has been reduced to $8.6 million and no longer includes the elementary classroom addition from the previous proposal.
The remaining work includes:
Heating and ventilation improvements
Asbestos removal and flooring replacement
Window and exterior door replacement
Electrical and energy-efficient lighting upgrades
Exterior masonry repairs
Ceiling replacement
ADA improvements to existing restrooms
Parking lot and sidewalk repairs
Targeted improvements and repairs to the existing CTE/shop area
Necessary maintenance can be delayed, but it cannot be avoided indefinitely. As building systems continue to age, delaying critical repairs may lead to larger problems and increased costs in the future.
Resources Used First
Hinton CSD has prioritized using available SAVE and PPEL resources before asking voters to consider additional funding. These investments have addressed major needs and reduced how much the District ultimately needs to borrow.
Changes to Iowa’s SAVE program will also begin reducing the amount of funding available to school districts for facility needs beginning in FY27, placing additional importance on how remaining and future projects are prioritized and funded.

A satellite in-person voting opportunity will also be available in Hinton ahead of the November 3 General Election.
